New Concept? Custom Art!

June 7, 2020 by LuxeSpecs

A recent article in the Mansion Section of the Wall Street Journal had a NEW idea – custom art! My clients know we have always been into custom art! First it was with model homes then ASID show houses. Artists doing custom finishes that were fine art and voila! We have the perfect solution for that space! In the past forty years, there have been more canvases than Betty, Dawn and I can count. Sometimes the space needs color. So pick it and paint it! These details are the difference between boring and exciting. Continuity that can be simple or chaotic! You have probably heard that art shouldn’t match the fabric, I agree, that is too much. Whether you have a verifiable work of art or do-it-yourself, the overall feeling of the space should be pleasing whether exciting or subdued. Custom art is for a particular space and for an end user with input – a very individualized approach.

Here are 3 projects I’ve done with artist Betty Hahn.

For a model home in the ‘90s we hinged particle board and Betty painted black cactus.

In an ASID showhouse the gathering room had a walkway behind it so Betty painted three large canvases to tie in the colors of the seating area and make a backdrop to ground the room.

We had a kitchen remodel that did not include new windows. No problem, we created art to balance the space and won First Place for kitchen design!

Something Old, Something New

New Picture (1)A few medallions added to a flat ceiling can create interest in a very subtle way! One of the artists I work with cut this stencil for our home from a wallpaper pattern that was similar but smaller. We added it to the ceiling for interest.

New Picture (2)There are also replications of the historic ceilings that can be effective on higher ceiling for detailing. For an historic and interesting application check out the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception recreating the look of the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome. Begin with a base coat of Sherwin Williams Duration Home in matte finish, stencil on sizing and proceed with metallic leaf, aluminum leaf and additional varnishes and stencils.

Here is a creative use of stenciling! It is combined with hand painted tiles for hood detailing is this luxury kitchen.

Make your rooms complete with art that fills the space appropriately! Going to art galleries and finding a piece you love is great fun! Adding textiles, antique architectural remnants, metal sculpture or your own photography will give you a start in personalizing your space and it may not be too costly to afford. From the temporary art shows during prime tourist season to enlargements of your own photos from Costco, you can give your space a fresh look! Is Art An Investment?

November 27, 2013 by LuxeSpecs

Liz-1-Early-Colored-Liz-1963Apparently! Francis Bacon’s Three Views of Lucian Freud just sold for $142.4 million at Christie’s in New York City! At Sotheby’s Andy Warhol’s “Liz #1” sold for $20,325! We’ve heard the recession did not affect everyone! Do you have a favorite piece that you bought many years ago from a good, but as yet unknown artist? My clients who have purchased from Scottsdale, AZ galleries have been pleasantly surprised to find the artists they have pieces from are in demand when they want to sell them. Of course, Antiques Road Show is a sure motivator with their recovered treasures! The real test is if you love it and enjoy living with it – that makes it priceless! (Unless you get a great offer!)
